Ethics and Standards

Last Updated: 11/14/2025 This Ethics and Standards policy explains how The Modern Headline approaches accuracy, fairness, independence, and accountability in our news coverage. Every story we publish is expected to meet these standards.

Core Principles

The Modern Headline is committed to clear, fact focused reporting that respects readers time and intelligence. Our work is guided by the following principles:
  • Accuracy over speed
  • Clear sourcing and verification
  • Editorial independence from political and financial pressure
  • Fair treatment of subjects and sources
  • Transparency and accountability when we fall short

Accuracy and Verification

We strive to ensure that all factual claims in our coverage are supported by credible sources and public records where available. Numbers, quotes, and key assertions should be cross checked against primary documents, official statements, or reliable reporting from established outlets. When information is uncertain, developing, or disputed, we say so directly and avoid presenting speculation as fact.

Sourcing and Attribution

We aim to be clear with readers about where information comes from. When we rely on reporting by other outlets, public documents, or official statements, we attribute that material in plain language and, when appropriate, link to the underlying source. Anonymous or unnamed sourcing is reserved for situations where the information is in the public interest and the source may face a credible risk to employment, safety, or privacy. In those cases we describe why anonymity was granted as clearly as possible.

Fairness and Context

Our coverage should represent key facts and perspectives needed for a reader to understand a story without distortion. When a person, organization, or public official is the subject of critical reporting, we make a good faith effort to include relevant context and their position or response when it is available in time for publication. Opinion and analysis pieces are allowed to take a clear point of view, but they should still be grounded in accurate facts and should not misrepresent the arguments of others.

Independence and Conflicts of Interest

Editorial decisions are made independently of advertisers, sponsors, donors, and outside partners. Commercial relationships do not determine which stories we cover or how we cover them. Contributors and editors are expected to avoid assignments where they have a direct financial stake, undisclosed political role, or personal relationship that could reasonably call their independence into question. Apparent conflicts that cannot be avoided should be disclosed to readers in clear language.

Use of Language and Tone

News coverage should be written in direct, plain language. Headlines and framing should reflect the substance of the story and not exaggerate, minimize, or mislead for the sake of clicks. We avoid slurs, gratuitous personal attacks, and dehumanizing language. Strong terms such as liar, corrupt, or criminal are reserved for situations where they are supported by clear facts, legal findings, or on the record evidence.

Visuals and Supporting Media

Images, video, and other visual elements should accurately represent the events, people, or issues described in the article. We do not knowingly use altered or misleading visuals that change the basic meaning of what occurred. Illustrative or stock imagery is allowed when clearly appropriate, but it should not falsely imply that a specific person or location is shown when that is not the case.

Use of Digital Tools

The Modern Headline uses modern digital tools to assist with research, drafting, formatting, and quality control. These tools are used to improve clarity, consistency, and speed while maintaining factual accuracy and editorial oversight. Regardless of the tools involved in production, stories are expected to be checked against source material, edited for accuracy and clarity, and published in line with this Ethics and Standards policy.

Sensitive Topics and Legal Considerations

Coverage involving crime, accusations of wrongdoing, national security, public health, or other sensitive areas is handled with particular care. We aim to avoid unnecessary harm, respect due process, and clearly distinguish between allegations, charges, and established facts. We avoid publishing personally identifying details such as home addresses or contact information for private individuals unless there is a compelling public interest and no reasonable alternative.

Corrections and Updates

When we learn that a published story contains a significant factual error, we correct it as promptly as possible. Corrections or clarifying updates should be noted in the article in a way that is visible and honest about what was changed. For developing stories, we may update articles as new information becomes available. When changes materially alter the understanding of the story, we will make clear that the piece has been updated and why.
